There was a time when you thought that having your window tinted would be a great idea and got it done. But now for some reason or the other you want to get off with your window tinting. Your need may be because of the reduced visibility especially at night due to tint, or you got bored of the tint look or general wear and tear in the tint. But as of applying, you need expertise for tint removal as well. If you start removing the tint without any precautions and pre-planning, you might ruin your windows in the process.
Luckily, there are some proven methods of tint removal which you can do and they are not much expensive as well. All that is needed is simple material, lots of elbow grease and free time. As a precaution, keep one window of the car open at all the time so that you don’t inhale the unwanted fumes. Also, if you are using a blow dryer or a steamer, be cautious to not to burn yourself.
Steaming method
The cleanest and easiest method of tint removal is the steaming method. It involves applying heat to the inner side of the window with the help of blow dryer or steamer, in order to melt the glue which sticks the tint to the window. Then the sheet needs to be pulled gently. Using a hard hand with tint sheet can result in breaking it and glue may get stuck to the window only.
Scrape and wash method
In this method, tinting sheet is cut and lifted with the help of razor blade. The remaining glue on the window can then be scrubbed off with soapy water. Be cautious to not to scratch the window or damage the defroster lines.
Ammonia and heat method
Some preparation is needed before this. The car needs to be parked in a sunny area and its interior to be covered with garbage bags or plastic tarp in order to protect the upholstery. The method involves spraying undiluted ammonia to the inside of the window and then covering it with plastic bag. The bag should be smooth and even on the window. After that comes the step of spraying soap water to the outside of the window and covering this as well with a plastic bag. After leaving your car in sun for a while, the tinting can be taken off using a razor blade or your fingernail; it will come off smoothly in large pieces. Then the window can be gently rubbed and dried.
This method is effective but creates a lot of mess and also the fumes produced are injurious to health. So as mentioned above, keep one window open to avoid inhaling the fumes.
If window tinting goes beyond the visual area on the window, then you need to remove the window first by dismantling the door and then again fixing it after the removal of tint. You can refer to your car manual or search on the internet for the process.
Whichever method you are using, be sure to be prepared for it first and gather all the material required. Work gently and slowly for getting off with your window tinting to avoid any damage to the windows.
